The first 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette was manufactured on August 1, 1989. General Motors' first attempt at a minivan, the rear drive truck based Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari, had failed to compete strongly with Chrysler, so the front drive Silhouette, Chevrolet Lumina APV and Pontiac Trans Sport followed. The Pontiac Trans Sport concept car shown to the public in 1986 had previewed the design. The 1990 Silhouette began the series, a front drive Oldsmobile minivan, built in New York State.
