The Legacy was formally released on 23 January 1989 in Japan, at an introductory price of 2,550,000 yen for the turbocharged RS, and the first Legacy was available at Japanese dealerships on 1 February 1989. Worldwide distribution began in 1990. In Australia it was called the Liberty because the name Legacy conflicted with Legacy Australia. The Indiana plant officially began producing it on 11 September 1989. The Legacy is a mid-size car built by the Japanese automaker Subaru from 1989 to 2025.
