The Galant began American sales in 1989, side by side with the previous generation Sigma. A limited edition based on the GTi-16v, modified by the German tuner AMG, then owned by Mercedes-Benz, was introduced in 1989, with a mildly uprated engine. Starting in 1989 the Galant V series was produced for the Japanese market as a sporty alternative to the regular Galant range. The Galant competed with the Toyota Corona, Nissan Bluebird, Honda Accord and Mazda Capella.
