The 1989 Colony Park was the second year of the updated front end of the Panther platform wagon, with the more aerodynamic front, modernized front seats and GS and LS trims. As the sole full size Mercury wagon it faced declining sales as interest shifted to vans and four door SUVs, and the newer Mercury Sable station wagon was an internal competitor. The Colony Park was a Panther platform wagon and the flagship station wagon series of Ford Motor Company.
