From 1989 an LPG powered 2.0 liter version of the Luce sedan was also built for the Japanese market for taxi and other fleet usage, called the Mazda Custom Cab, which remained in production until December 1995. The Luce of 1989 was in its fourth year of the HC series. The name Luce was taken from the Italian word for light. In 1991 the Luce was replaced by the Sentia, which was also exported under the 929 nameplate.
