This generation vehicle was sold in North America in sedan bodystyle only beginning with the 1988 model year; the hardtop was not available, nor were the rotary engines. The Luce of 1988 was in its third year of the HC series, available as a Royal Classic with a turbocharged 13B rotary or 2.0 liter V6. The name Luce was taken from the Italian word for light. In 1991 the Luce was replaced by the Sentia, which was also exported under the 929 nameplate.
