The Tredia of 1988 was in its seventh year, a sedan relative of the Mirage with a longer body and larger engines. It carried the Tredia name, said to come from the Three Diamonds logo of Mitsubishi, and was among the first cars that Mitsubishi sold in America without the involvement of Chrysler, its partner at the time. The Tredia used front-wheel drive and was similar in design to the contemporary Mirage, although larger.
