In 1987 the Tredia was in its sixth year on sale, still sharing under the skin parts with the Cordia coupe, and offered with front wheel drive or four wheel drive in some markets. Normally aspirated cars in New Zealand had by now been changed to a 1.8 liter engine and a conventional five speed gearbox, and some were offered with a three speed automatic. The Tredia was one of the first cars imported and sold to America by Mitsubishi without the involvement of Chrysler.
