In 1988 a 3.0 liter SOHC V6 engine was made available across the range, alongside a 2.5 liter turbo diesel, with the first intercooler fitted to a 4x4. The 1988 and later model came with a 3 door body for a short wheelbase or a 5 door body for a long wheelbase. September 1988's NF facelift introduced the 3.0 liter V6 of 143 PS in the top Superwagon with a five speed manual or four speed automatic. The Pajero shared Mitsubishi's heavy duty Super Select four wheel drive system with a few other models later.
