For the 1988 model year a Mazda sourced five speed manual transmission was introduced for the Bronco, and fuel injection was added to the 5.8 liter V8. Skid plates for the transfer case became standard equipment. The Bronco returned its 4.9 liter inline six, 5.0 liter V8 and 5.8 liter H.O. V8 engines, and a three speed C6 automatic was offered from 1987 to 1990. The Bronco kept the flatter grille and composite headlamps of 1987.
