For the 1988 model year the E24 became a world car, wearing the same bumpers and aerodynamic treatments as its high performance counterparts in every market. Until then the cars for the United States and the rest of the world had looked different. The M635CSi and M6 of 1988 were the last full model year before the production run came to an end in the next year, 1989. The M635CSi had opened the line in 1983, so the world car change came five years into the first run.
