In 1988 the E24 6 Series was in its penultimate year of production, as the 635CSi and M635CSi two door coupe, one of the last cars of the generation to be built at Dingolfing. The E31 8 Series, which would take over from it, was being prepared for its launch, and the E24 had by now been built for twelve years. It had been 12 years since the coupe was introduced in 1976, and only the 635CSi and M6 remained in the final model years.
