An optional all wheel drive system became available in the Tempo and Topaz in 1987 and was offered until 1991. The XR5 sport model, a coupe, was available in the 1987 model year. The last year of the first generation, the 1987 Topaz was succeeded by the redesigned second generation, which arrived in November 1987 as a 1988 model, with an optional driver's airbag. It used the aerodynamic exterior design first seen on the Ford Sierra and the 1983 Thunderbird.
