An automatic gearbox, the KM148, became optional on the petrol Superwagon for the October 1986 ND update in Australia, while the 2.5 liter turbo diesel replaced the old 2.3 liter unit. The first generation Pajero was in its fifth year, built in Japan and sold as the Montero in some markets, with the Super Select four wheel drive system still to come later in the decade. Over the 40 year run to 2021 more than 3.3 million Pajeros were sold.
