For 1986 Ford introduced the Taurus and Mercury Sable to replace the LTD and Mercury Marquis, as it expanded its use of front wheel drive. To help transition buyers into this significant design change the company continued to offer the LTD alongside its replacement partway into the 1986 model year. 1986 models are identifiable by the federally mandated center high mounted brake lamp. Chicago Assembly produced the final LTD on 3 January 1986.
