The convertible came back to the Corvette line for 1986, after being absent since 1975, and a yellow convertible paced the 1986 Indianapolis 500. The car also introduced the Pass Key I passive anti theft system, in which a pellet in each key was detected by the car's computer. All 7,315 convertibles of that year carried pace car identification on the console. The return of the convertible, absent from the Corvette lineup since 1975, was the headline of the model year.
