BMW began fitting an anti lock braking system to the E28 after 1984, although it was an option in some markets, and M5 production began for the European market in the same year, building on the E28's platform with the engine of the M1 supercar. The 533i continued through 1984 in the United States, where its production was limited to two years. M5 production for Europe started two years before the North American model.
