In 1983 the 524td became the first 5 Series, and the first BMW, to be powered by a diesel engine, a turbocharged six cylinder unveiled at the Frankfurt show. The 533i also arrived in the United States in 1983 and a four speed automatic became optional there. The E28 gave BMW customers a diesel option for the first time and set the pattern for the 5 Series diesel lines that followed. The 524td was a turbocharged six cylinder with mechanical fuel injection.
