In February 1983 Mitsubishi introduced a long wheelbase five door model, with a choice of two engines, a 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol and a diesel, and a High Roof variant was added in July 1983. In Australia the NA series was released in January 1983 in short and long wheelbase three door wagon formats with a 2.6 liter petrol or 2.3 liter turbo diesel, both with five speed gearboxes. The Pajero name comes from the Geoffroy's cat, Leopardus pajeros, and it was sold as the Montero in North America and Shogun in the United Kingdom.
