The first Pajero was launched in May 1982 with a design very similar to its concept model, the Pajero II shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1979, after its debut there in October 1981. It officially replaced the Mitsubishi Jeep, and came as a short wheelbase three door with 2.6 liter petrol and 2.3 liter turbo diesel engines. The name Pajero comes from the Geoffroy's cat, Leopardus pajeros, while the Montero and Shogun names were used elsewhere.
