1982 AMC Spirit

Automobiles

A new 5 speed manual transmission was offered as an option in 1982, thus the Spirit GT became America's first pony car available with a 5 speed gearbox. New low drag front disc brakes were standard. Together, they allowed the 2.5 liter Spirit to achieve 37 miles per gallon on the highway, according to the 1982 EPA estimates. American Motors promoted the 1982 Spirit in an unusual television ad campaign in which a new Spirit was dropped into 30 feet of saltwater.
