From 1981 all vehicle makers had to use a 17 character VIN, and the 1981 to 1983 Continental Mark VI has the VIN code 1MR designating Continental as the make rather than 1LN for Lincoln. After 1980 the 351 V8 was discontinued on the Mark VI because of poor sales and no power advantage over the 5.0 liter V8. The Signature Series returned for 1981 in red and silver exteriors. Ford began developing a downsized Mark VI in the mid 1970s as the successor to the Mark V.
