Ford had also planned to replace the Falcon after the XE model with a smaller front wheel drive sedan and hatchback derived from the Ford Telstar and Mazda 626 platform in a program codenamed Capricorn. By 1981, however, thanks to the Falcon's sales success, Capricorn was cancelled by incoming chief executive Bill Dix in favour of the EA26 program, a new full size rear wheel drive car range that would become the fifth generation Falcon.
