The Silver Spirit was introduced by Rolls-Royce in 1980 as the first of a new generation of company models, together with its long wheelbase version the Silver Spur. The Spur was the first car to feature a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy, spring loaded to sink into the radiator shell if dislodged. The hydropneumatic suspension of the Silver Shadow was modified with a Girling automatic hydraulic ride height control system.
