For 1980, to meet EPA CAFE standards, a 255 cubic inch V8 became standard in the Canadian market Custom 500, which kept the base Ford LTD front end with single rectangular headlights and inboard parking lights of the redesigned Panther platform. In the United States, the Custom 500 was replaced by a LTD S variant of the new downsized Panther platform. The Custom served Ford as a fleet and economy nameplate.
