The third generation Bronco of 1980 was built on the seventh generation F-150 chassis and was designed to address concerns that had kept the 1978 and 1979 Broncos from the market. To save fuel, engineers gave the 1980 and 1981 models a much weaker frame with holes stamped out, which cut 375 pounds of curb weight. The Bronco came with an inline six as standard for the first time since 1977, mated only to a manual transmission, and the 400 V8 was discontinued.
