The 1980 Caprice Classic saw its first major revision since the 1977 downsizing, with efforts to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics: greater use of aluminum, including in the bumper reinforcement and radiators, made 1980 models about 100 pounds lighter, and trunk capacity rose to 20.9 cubic feet. The 250 inline six was replaced by a new 3.8 liter Chevrolet V6 as the base engine, and a 267 cubic inch V8 became the standard engine for wagons.
