By 1980 the E23 was well established as BMW's flagship luxury saloon with the 728, 732i and 733i, the turbocharged 745i for Europe and a version for the United States and Japan. It was built in Germany and was a car with a long wheelbase for rear passenger comfort, the only 7 Series body for years, and that was the standard on which later cars were measured. The 7 Series was sold in 1980 with the E12 5 Series and the E21 3 Series as its smaller companions.
