The 1979 fourth generation Sprinter was based on the fourth generation Corolla coupe, two door hardtop, four door sedan and three door liftback. In August 1979 a 1.8 liter 13T-U petrol engine was introduced. This was the first model year of the Toyota Sprinter (fourth generation, E70), 1979 to 1982, which took over from the Toyota Sprinter (third generation, E40 and E60); the 1980 model year follows it.
