A sunroof was added to the options list in 1979. The Sambar was available in Standard and Super Deluxe models, with the van also adding the well equipped Custom L model, which included a rear window wiper and washer, a first for the class. The Sambar of 1979 was in its seventh year of the third generation. Four wheel drive became optional in 1980. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
