A Range Rover took the four-wheel-drive class of the inaugural Paris-Dakar Rally in 1979, and again in 1981. In 1979 Leyland Australia started putting the Range Rover together from kits at Enfield, New South Wales, and Land Rover began Project Iceberg with Perkins to build a diesel version of the Rover V8, a project that failed because the alloy block could not take the pressures of diesel operation.
