In 1978 British Leyland reorganised by making Land Rover a subsidiary in its own right, Land Rover Limited, which from then made the Range Rover. Several independent companies were offering four-door conversions of the two-door Range Rover in the late 1970s, a sign of the demand for rear-seat access that led Land Rover to build its own four-door in 1981. The Range Rover itself was still the two-door car with the 3.5-litre V8 and permanent four-wheel drive.
