Production of the Ranchero ceased in 1979 with, among the traditional choices, a commemorative 1979.5 model. Cars were getting smaller and subject to increasing government restrictions, and requirements for a car based pickup made such a vehicle less attractive to build, while purpose designed light trucks had to meet much less stringent emissions and fuel economy rules. A total of 508,355 Rancheros were produced during its run.
