During the oil crisis in Brazil, Ford added to the Galaxie and Landau range in June 1979 a 302 cubic inch engine with a higher compression ratio, so that it could run on ethanol made from sugar cane. The first such car was a gift to the Brazilian president, and 4,412 petrol Landaus were built. Ford Brasil produced it at its São Paulo area plant for twelve years. The Landau was Ford's top model in Brazil and the only large American style sedan the company built there.
