The North American models started with the carbureted 4M engine, but in mid 1978 the fuel injected 4M-E replaced it. Models that complied with the stricter 1978 emission regulations were assigned X40 series chassis numbers, and a station wagon appeared in August 1978, Toyota's first in South Africa. It was model year 3 of 4 in the Toyota Mark II (third generation, X30 and X40), 1976 to 1979, coming after the 1977 model year and before the 1979 model year. Model year pages for the Toyota Mark II run from 1968 to 2004.
