The Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon were five door hatchbacks introduced in January 1978, developed in tandem with Chrysler Europe. Following its launch, the Dodge Omni was awarded the 1978 Motor Trend Car of the Year Award. The Omni was priced at $2,500 and Chrysler built it at the Belvidere Assembly plant in Illinois. Nearly 200,000 examples of the combined model line were sold in the first model year, although demand for compacts and subcompacts at first fell.
