In May 1977 Mitsubishi began introducing the MCA-Jet engine for Japan and other emissions controlled markets on the Galant, and the wagon version, the Van in Japan, was introduced in August 1977, a little after the sedans. After late 1977 the slower selling 1850 variant was discontinued as Mitsubishi worked on making the 1600 and 2000 engines pass the stricter emissions rules. The name Galant comes from the French word for chivalrous.
