The third generation was introduced in 1976 as the Galant Sigma, and a new two door coupe, known in Japan as the Galant Lambda, replaced the Galant GTO. In August 1976 the name was changed to Chrysler Colt in Australia, and the new GS II received a 2.0 liter engine of 85 kilowatts. The facelift version of the previous car arrived two years late in other markets in mid 1976. The Galant competed with the Toyota Corona, Nissan Bluebird, Honda Accord and Mazda Capella.
