For the 1977 model year the standard Cougar replaced the Montego as the Mercury intermediate range, the counterpart of the Ford LTD II, adding a four door sedan and a five door station wagon, and the XR-7 returned as a personal luxury coupe, a counterpart of the Ford Thunderbird. The cat's head emblem made its first appearance. The standard engine for non XR-7 Cougars was the 302, producing 134 horsepower, and sales were more popular than any since 1967.
