For 1977 the Thunderbird became an intermediate car, built on the platform of the Ford Torino and Elite with new styling, and it was split from the Continental Mark V. The sharper, more square look and a price that was 2,700 dollars lower than 1976 proved popular, and over 318,000 were sold in 1977. The wrapover roofline would carry on in smaller versions in later years, and the LTD Landau coupe took over as Ford's full size luxury coupe.
