In 1977 the F-Series passed the Chevrolet C/K to become the best selling truck in the United States, a position it has held ever since. The 1977 models had a redesign of exterior trim, with smaller cowl insignias moved near the windshield and a rectangular fuel door on the bed to conceal the gas cap, and the fuel tank behind the seat was discontinued because of safety concerns. It was the last year of the medium duty F-500, and the Super Camper Special was renamed Camper Special.
