Launched in late September 1976, the 1977 Caprice Classic was drastically downsized, which cut weight by 611 to 871 pounds and its length by 10 to 14 inches while raising headroom, rear seat legroom and trunk space. It shared its 116 inch wheelbase with the intermediate Chevelle, and a V8 was no longer standard, the base engine being the 250 inline six. The 1977 models became the best selling car in the United States, and Motor Trend named the Caprice Car of the Year.
