All three speed manual transmission shifters were now mounted on the floor in 1977. A new AMX model also appeared, a sports oriented model introduced to appeal to young, performance oriented car buyers. This model marked the return of a famous name that evoked AMC's original AMX two seat sports car. The AMX was available only as a hatchback with the inline six featuring a floor shifted four speed manual or optional automatic, and 1977 was the final year of the Hornet.
