The Sambar of 1974 was in its second year of the third generation, the Goriki Sambar, with the water cooled two stroke 356 cc EK34 engine producing 28 PS at 5500 rpm. The truck was the K71 and the van the K81. The EK21 four stroke water cooled engine would arrive in February 1976 to reduce emissions. Four wheel drive became optional in 1980. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
