The Mustang II went on sale for 1974 at the same time as the oil embargo, and Motor Trend named it Car of the Year. It was a coupe or three door hatchback with a 2.3 liter overhead cam four, the first fully metric engine built in the United States, and a 2.8 liter V6 as the only option; for the only time in its history a Mustang could not be had with a V8. Ford made 296,041 of them in the first year, and styling was influenced by the Italian coachbuilder Ghia.
