The Arab Oil Embargo of October 1973 came just as the 1974 model year began. American Motors improved the Gremlin's back seat, and a deeper front fascia made the car appear longer. The Gremlin X stripe pattern was given a hockey stick look for 1974. Production of the 1974 model year was extended into November to delay the need to install catalytic converters. A total of 171,128 Gremlins were sold in 1974, an increase of nearly 40 percent over 1973.
