For 1973 the base 170 cubic inch six was dropped and the 200 six became the base engine, and a new, larger front bumper to meet federal standards was added to all models. A new Custom decor package with vinyl roof, body colored wheel covers, wide vinyl insert body side moldings, vinyl bucket seats, luxury carpeting and extra sound insulation was a popular option on the Comet. It was available as two and four door sedans. The fifth generation Comet was the Mercury version of the Ford Maverick, with a different grille, taillights and hood.
