For 1973 the Lincoln Continental was brought into compliance with federal crash regulations with a 5 mile per hour front bumper, which moved forward several inches and was fitted with rubber tipped impact overriders. The rear bumper was modified in a similar manner, with a 2.5 mile per hour rating, and in total the Continental gained nearly five inches in length. As a counterpart to the Town Car, a two door Continental Town Coupe was introduced, with a padded vinyl top.
