A 250 cubic inch six cylinder engine and a three speed manual transmission with column shift remained standard equipment through the 1973 model year, and only about 1,400 cars were built with the inline six in 1973. The 5 mile per hour front bumpers that were mandated for 1973 also changed the look of the car, as they did for the Impala and Caprice. The Bel Air was by then the low level full size Chevrolet.
