The Sambar of 1972 was in its seventh and last full year of the second generation, the baban Sambar, a rear engine cabover with the EK33 engine of 26 PS and conventionally hinged front doors. The third generation was due in February 1973, nicknamed the Goriki Sambar. The first two generations used the air cooled engine from the Subaru 360. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
